Record Book – The best List A bowling figures for Uganda

Uganda’s medium-fast bowler Bilal Hassun collected match-winning figures of 5/27 from 8.4 overs in his team’s fourth World Cup Challenge League encounter against Italy at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground Turf 2 in Oman yesterday. This was the first ever instance of Ugandan bowler taking five wickets in a List A match. On that note, here is a look at the five best bowling figures for Uganda in List A cricket.

5/27 by Bilal Hassun v Italy, Al Amerat, 2019-20

Hassun created history by becoming the first Ugandan  to record a List A five-wicket haul, which was pivotal in securing a fourth successive win for the Cricket Cranes at the World Cup Challenge League B. Defending a modest 218, Uganda received a boost when Hassun removed Nikolai Smith in his third over. The 29-year-old pacer later grabbed the last four wickets, as Italy went from 157/6 to 180 all out.

4/21 by Roger Mukasa v Bermuda, Dubai, 2011

Before Hassun’s feat, it was  pace-bowling all-rounder Roger Mukasa who held the record of the best List A bowling figures for Uganda. Coming in as the fourth-change bowler as Bermuda replied to Uganda’s 249/7 in this third-round World Cricket League Division Two match, he took 4/21 in seven overs to spur a slide from 137/5 to 175 all out.  This was Uganda’s only win in five games at the tournament.

4/30 by Charles Waiswa v Namibia, Mount Maunganui, 2013-14

Uganda finished on the losing side in each of their five games at the 2015 World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand. The streak included a 100-run defeat at the hands of Namibia in their last group fixture – a rain-hit 36-over affair – that saw them get bundled out for  61. The only bright spot for Uganda was the bowling of left-arm pacer Charles Waiswa, who took 4/30 in eight overs to help limit Namibia to 161/9.

4/35 by Henry Senyondo v Bermuda, Al Amerat, 2019-20

Three days before Hassun took his fifer, promising left-arm spinner Henry Senyondo starred with the ball in Uganda’s second match of the World Cup Challenge League B, taking 4/35 in 8.2 overs. Bermuda were 187/4 when Senyondo first struck, and went on to lose six wickets for 21 to be bowled out for 208. Despite falling to 29/2 , Uganda duly sealed a convincing seven-wicket win in the 41st over.

4/37 by Joel Olwenyi v United Arab Emirates, Lurgan, 2005

Uganda’s last group match of the 2005 ICC Trophy (the Qualifier for the 2007 World Cup) in Ireland resulted in a 63-run defeat, but not before an impressive bowling display from captain Joel Olwenyi. The pace-bowling all-rounder returned figures of 4/37 in ten overs, as the UAE were dismissed for 201. He also scored a determined 35 while opening the innings, but Uganda never recovered from the depths of 38/4.

  1. Uganda seem to have been on the cusp of doing something beyond the Test world. Hopefully they can progress and alongside teams like Singapore really make cricket a global game and if nothing else provide some variety.

    1. Yes. Namibia and Uganda both have it in them to carry the African Associate flag going into the near future.
